Usually the prospect of a road trip will inspire the creation and curation of a playlist of tunes tailored for long drives and strange destinations. With his latest album, singer/guitarist Andy Cabic has flipped the script. Throw on Vetiver’s new Up On High and you’ll be jonesing to take a trip of your own, with Cabic providing all the soundtrack material you’ll need.
Having relocated two times since he released 2015’s Complete Strangers, Cabic wrote the songs for Up On High with the instrument that was most accessible to him whilst surrounded by a sea of opened and unopened boxes: an acoustic guitar. The album was tracked over a few days at a friend’s house in the high desert of California, a stripped-down setup that captured the organic immediacy of a roomful of friends playing together on the floor.
Cabic is already in the midst of an extensive international tour, which he’ll complete in the middle of February with two shows in Lisbon. Then he’ll embark on a 17-date U.S. tour that will take him from Minneapolis to Austin and all points in between. Meanwhile, praise continues to roll in for Up On High from outlets like UNCUT, Paste, and Mojo, where it earned 4 stars.
